Nigeria’s former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has received endorsement from majority of the voting members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) placing her ahead South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee.
According to a breaking news on Arise News on Tuesday afternoon, Okonjo-Iweala defeated her only challenger, South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee, polling 104 votes from 164 member countries to defeat South Korea’s Trade Minister in the two-man race.
As stated by Bloomberg, 27 European Union members voted in support of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to be the next director-general of the World Trade Organization. With the US leaning strongly towards Yoo Myung-hee, official announcements of the final decision and consensus pick have been re-scheduled for November 9, 2020.
The winner will succeed Brazilian Roberto Azevedo, who abruptly left the WTO at the end of August, a year early.
