Ex-Arsenal Midfielder Thomas Partey Charged with Rape and Sexual Assault

Former Arsenal and Ghana international midfielder Thomas Partey, 32, has been formally charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault by the Metropolitan Police, with incidents alleged to have occurred between 2021 and 2022.

The investigation began in February 2022 following an initial complaint. The charges involve three different women: two counts of rape stem from one woman, three counts from a second, and one count of sexual assault from a third. Partey is scheduled to appear before the Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 5.

In response to the charges, Partey’s lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, stated he denies all allegations, has fully cooperated with investigators during the three-year inquiry, and looks forward to clearing his name.

Arsenal confirmed that Partey’s contract ended on June 30, and added that they are unable to comment further due to ongoing legal proceedings. The club emphasized that his contract conclusion and the ongoing legal process prevented any further comment.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, leading the Metropolitan Police investigation, underscored the importance of supporting the victims and urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed their decision to prosecute followed a thorough review of evidence, emphasizing the need to uphold Partey’s right to a fair trial and cautioning against any public commentary that could prejudice the proceedings.

Partey joined Arsenal in October 2020 from Atlético Madrid and remained with the club through the 2024–2025 season, totaling 167 appearances, before departing at contract expiry. He also earned 53 caps for Ghana. The automatic rise in public profile due to the ongoing legal situation comes as his agent continues negotiations with other clubs.
