The Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, has emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among government agencies to maintain lasting security within Nigeria’s maritime domain.
Speaking at a maritime security engagement, the NIMASA boss said coordinated efforts between security agencies, the military, and other stakeholders remain essential in tackling piracy, illegal activities, and other threats along the nation’s waterways.
Mobereola noted that Nigeria has recorded significant progress in improving maritime safety in recent years, particularly in the Gulf of Guinea, but warned that sustaining those gains would require continuous partnership and information sharing among relevant institutions.
According to him, no single agency can effectively secure the maritime sector alone due to the complexity of modern security challenges facing the industry.
He also highlighted the importance of technology, intelligence gathering, and joint operations in strengthening Nigeria’s maritime surveillance capabilities and protecting economic activities linked to the blue economy.
Industry stakeholders at the event reportedly commended ongoing security initiatives while urging authorities to remain proactive in addressing emerging threats within the sector.
Nigeria’s maritime industry plays a critical role in regional trade and national revenue generation, making security within the nation’s territorial waters a major economic priority.
