Nigeria Becomes Europe’s Leading Jet Fuel Supplier, Surpassing the United States

Nigeria has emerged as Europe’s largest supplier of jet fuel for the month of June, overtaking the United States following a sharp increase in exports from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

Market data indicates that approximately 466,000 metric tonnes of aviation fuel were shipped from Nigeria to Europe during the month, marking the country’s highest monthly export volume since it became a net exporter of jet fuel. The surge reflects the growing influence of the Dangote Refinery in international refined petroleum markets.

The latest figures show Nigerian exports nearly doubled compared to May, while shipments from the United States declined significantly over the same period. The shift enabled Nigeria to become Europe’s top external source of aviation fuel in June.

Industry analysts attribute the milestone to increased production capacity at the Dangote Refinery, which has rapidly expanded its output since commencing operations. The refinery has played a key role in transforming Nigeria from a major importer of refined petroleum products into an emerging exporter serving markets across Africa, Europe, and other regions.

The higher export volumes also come at a time when Europe’s aviation fuel market has experienced increased supply from alternative producers, contributing to softer prices after earlier disruptions in global energy markets. Nigeria’s ability to meet part of the continent’s demand has further strengthened its position as an important player in the global fuel trade.

Energy experts say the development underscores the strategic importance of domestic refining capacity to Nigeria’s economy. Increased exports of value-added petroleum products are expected to boost foreign exchange earnings, reduce reliance on crude oil exports, and enhance the country’s standing in the international energy market.

The achievement also highlights the growing competitiveness of Africa’s largest refinery, which continues to reshape global fuel supply chains while reinforcing Nigeria’s ambition to become a major refining and export hub.
