Nigerian football icon Jay-Jay Okocha has once again been celebrated on the global stage after FIFA confirmed that he still holds the record for the most successful dribbles completed in a single FIFA World Cup match.
According to FIFA records, Okocha achieved the feat during Nigeria’s Round of 16 clash against Italy at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States, where he completed 15 successful dribbles against one of the tournament’s strongest defensive teams. The Italian side featured renowned stars such as Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta, and Demetrio Albertini.
More than three decades later, the record remains unbeaten, highlighting Okocha’s reputation as one of football’s most gifted dribblers. FIFA’s ranking places Brazil’s Jairzinho and England’s Paul Gascoigne behind the Nigerian legend, with both players recording 13 successful dribbles in separate World Cup matches.
The recognition adds to Okocha’s enduring legacy as one of Africa’s greatest footballers and a player widely admired for his flair, creativity, and technical brilliance. During his international career, he represented Nigeria at three FIFA World Cup tournaments and played a key role in some of the country’s most memorable football moments.
FIFA also noted that Lionel Messi holds the record for the highest number of successful dribbles across all World Cup appearances, while the late Diego Maradona remains the player with the most successful dribbles in a single World Cup tournament.
