Powerful Winter Storm Claims Lives and Disrupts Activities Around South Africa

A severe winter storm sweeping across South Africa since last weekend has claimed at least seven lives in the Eastern Cape province, disrupting transport, electricity, and daily life.

Heavy rainfall and rare snowfall were triggered by an intense cold front, prompting the South African Weather Service to warn residents of imminent flooding dangers . Roads became treacherous, with some major routes closed after snow caused hazardous travel conditions.

One of the most harrowing incidents occurred near Mthatha, where a school bus carrying high school students was swept away by raging floodwaters. Although three children survived by clinging to trees, the fate of the others remains uncertain as rescue operations continue.

Local authorities have confirmed six fatalities in Mthatha, submerged homes and vehicles, and a seventh body recovered near Tsolo, approximately 40 km northwest. In a separate incident, a minibus taxi overturned while trying to avoid a fallen tree, resulting in five additional deaths.

Nearly half a million homes are without power after the storm downed lines and damaged critical infrastructure. Disaster response teams have been deployed across Eastern Cape and neighboring KwaZulu‑Natal to support recovery and aid efforts.

Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane described the situation as a “devastating reminder of nature’s force,” urging vigilance as weather forecasts predict further rain and snow. Similarly, President Cyril Ramaphosa extended condolences in light of the ongoing rescue mission and significant damage across the region .
