Pope Leo XIV Blesses New Tower at Barcelona’s Sagrada Família, Now the World’s Tallest Church

A major milestone has been achieved in the construction of Barcelona’s iconic Sagrada Família after Pope Leo XIV officially blessed the basilica’s newly completed central tower, which has become the tallest church structure in the world.

The newly inaugurated Tower of Jesus Christ rises to approximately 172.5 metres (566 feet), surpassing the height of all other church buildings globally. The completion marks a significant step in the decades-long effort to finish the masterpiece designed by renowned architect Antoni Gaudí.

Thousands of worshippers, tourists, and dignitaries gathered in Barcelona to witness the ceremony, which celebrated both the religious and architectural significance of the landmark. Church officials described the event as a historic moment for the Catholic community and for one of the world’s most visited monuments.

Construction of the Sagrada Família began in 1882 and has continued for more than a century, interrupted at various times by financial challenges, political unrest, and technological limitations. Gaudí devoted much of his life to the project before his death in 1926, leaving future generations to continue his vision.

The newly completed tower is crowned with a massive illuminated cross that can be seen from various parts of the city, further enhancing the basilica’s distinctive skyline. Architects and engineers involved in the project said modern construction techniques have helped accelerate progress while preserving Gaudí’s original design principles.

The Sagrada Família is widely regarded as one of the most remarkable examples of religious architecture in the world and has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its unique blend of Gothic and Art Nouveau influences attracts millions of visitors annually.

Church authorities indicated that work on other sections of the basilica will continue, with final completion expected in the coming years. Once finished, the structure is expected to stand as one of the most celebrated architectural achievements of the modern era.

The blessing of the new tower not only represents a religious milestone but also underscores the enduring legacy of Gaudí’s vision, which continues to inspire architects, artists, and visitors from around the world.
